S60 Door Issue

Post by paulab1976 »

Was hit by uninsured motorist. My husband has replaced my door. I am still getting the "Passenger side door open" message. Where is the sensor?? Something is not lined up correctly.
Any ideas? :(

Did he replace the whole door--panel and all? [I'm assuming he replaced the passenger side door, but you didn't state that explicitly--it was the passenger side door, right?] What I'm getting at is the window switch pack...did it come from the donor car or was it transfered?

Sorry, I have never started a thread before. Ok, Yes, Passenger side. The inside of the door is from the old door. The only thing damaged was the exterior. All wiring from old door. Is that where the sensor is??

Actually, when you take the panel off of your door, you will see different connectors on the ends...one goes to your door lock. Pull it apart and try cleaning the contacts with electrical cleaner- denatured alcohol would also work...see if you can get into the plugs (both ends) with a q-tip. Let it dry and then push the plug on and off several times- maybe this will work. If not that, then we need to go deeper. On the older cars, the actual switch at the front/driver's door controlled all the locks and windows of the rear doors too and that could be with the S60 too but I'm not sure- Might be worth cleaning the contacts up front as well.

EDIT: Just found this document (below) that may help you. There is evidently a plastic locking mechanism that you're suppose to insert into the door lock and turn so that the lock itself retains its correct position. I'll be you anything that when your husband pulled the door lock off to transfer to the new door it was disturbed. I'm not sure what to tell you about what to do now, but by you saying, "Something is not lined up correctly," I'll bet this is it. Anyway, print off the document or have your husband look at it and maybe he can figure things out. Either way, he's going to have to get back into that door.

Okay...upon further investigation, it looks like what I posted above may be only for the front door...it may not apply. Sorry, but since many of us don't know the S60, we're just trying to dig things up that may help. I did find another document that describes the different door modules and how they are tied into the CAN Bus (communications system) that Volvo uses. It could be that simply connectors are dirty (as indicated above- my first portion of this post) or it could be that the module for that door is somehow not communicating with the module, thus the CAN Bus. Evidently there are trouble codes that are set for this if the dealer hooks up VIDA (their software) and uses a Volvo specific scan tool. I would clean everything first, like I suggested and if that doesn't work, then you would need to take your car to the dealer or an independent mechanic who has VIDA and the Volvo scan tool to read off the diagnostic codes for the door module.

The only other thing I can guess is, if the lock module *wasn't* transferred, the one on the donor door had a problem; then pulling the module off the original door should solve it.

True...see my edit (I edited again)...
Another possibility is that the accident damaged that door module or the locking mechanism. Apparently there is a specific diagnostic test for the door open message (and possibly the lamp). I'm wondering if when you open the door, that light comes on on the side of the door...if it does, does it stay on when you close the door (harder to see, I know).

ok, latest development. old door and door parts completely off. New door and parts on. still getting same "passenger door open message" Battery cannot stay charged because the interior lights are forever on. We can turn off the dome, but the lights on the floor level stay on. Note to any CA residents: Full coverage does not include uninsured motorist. Wish someone told me when I moved here.

I believe uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is always extra, about 25-35 bucks, depending on the policy.
Your agent is supposed to explain this to you.
