choosing the right car for me

Post by ger »

Sorry this is my first post and ive probably posted in the wrong place.
I need to get myself a cheap volvo estate and have seen two in my area and budget but wanted a bit of advice off owners to see which is the better buy.

First car is
A 1998 940 2.3L ESTATE PETROL/GAS WITH 94K ON THE CLOCK
IVE SEEN THIS CAR AND ITS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.

SECOND CAR IS
1998 VOLVO V70 ESTATE 2.5L DIESEL WITH 160K ON THE CLOCK
THIS CAR HAS A NICE BEIGE INTERIOR AND LOTS MORE EXTRAS

I NEED THE CAR FOR COMMUTING LONG DISTANCES WITH SOME MUSICAL EQUIPMENT. I NEED TO DECIDE IS IT BETTER TO GET A 940 WITH MUCH LOWER MILEAGE BUT MORE EXPENSIVE TO RUN (LESS MPG)
OR A HIGHER MILEAGE DIESEL CHEAPER TO RUN (MORE MPG) AND A NICER INTERIOR WITH EXTRAS

BOTH CARS ARE SERVICED, HAVE VOLVO SERVICE HISTORYS AND ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. BOTH ARE THE SAME PRICE

THANKS, ANY HELP ADVICE IS GRATELY APPRECIATED
THANK YOU
GER

If well maintained and in good shape, I would get the '98 V70 diesel, hands down....I'm sure others might disagree with me.

ger, Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Put a front wheel drive and a rear wheel drive in front of me and tell me to choose, solely on the drive, and I will always go for the rear wheel drive.

However, with economy in mind, I agree with MIJ and advise the V70. My neighbour has a late '98 V70 diesel and returns 55mpg on long runs, fully loaded. When towing his caravan it drops to 45 - 50mpg.

Look after that diesel engine and it will be good for many more miles.

If you have to do any winter driving I would opt for the front wheel drive model. Rear wheel drive cars are fun to drive in the nice weather but arn't always fun on ice and slush. I am not familiar with the diesel engine, but in general diesel engines can handle more millage and how could a person not like 55mpg. Both would be good solid cars. Good luck
