Analysing Additives
Volvoites - please help. Just bought V70 with 100k up but in really great condition, timing belt changed on time etc and no obvious faults. Will provide servicing myself but what's the story on oil additives? Do they work or not? My research shows some experts saying that 3000 miles service intervals are imperative for top engine performance while others talk about service intervals of 25 and even 30k between oil changes based on the use of oil additives. Is this for real or a con? What gives? ...Thanks........JayJay

My $.02 is that I can tell you there are a diehard set of Amsoil devotees out there that swear by Amsoil products. I believe they make additives, but I know for sure they make a synth oil that is a competitor to Mobil 1. Now I've never used anything but Mobil 1, and my engine has never blown up
, nor has it even once depositied the smallest of flakes of metal onto my magnetic oil drain plug in 6 oil changes.
So I'm sticking to oil changes with Mobil at around 4-5k miles. It works for me.

Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.
Also -> Amazon link. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

Thanks Matthew - I'm figuring that if these additives are so effective how come the oil companies are holding back on their inclusion in the oil marketed across the counter and supplied with the cars? Is this some kind of planned obsolescence at work in the mojo industry?....JayJay.matthew1 wrote:My $.02 is that I can tell you there are a diehard set of Amsoil devotees out there that swear by Amsoil products.
