Failed inspection

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Failed inspection

Post by John Callahan »

Just had my 03 S80 inspected and it failed the OBD MONITOR READINESS, CATALYST, EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM, AND THE OXYGEN SYSTEM computer checkoff. Is this something that a do-it-yourselfer could repair? If so would really be grateful for advice about fixing it. Have thirty days to get in compliance.
Much obliged.

Well, it seems to me that you have more than one problem...probably the catalyst and oxygen system are related...either 02 sensor(s) or a vacuum leak that makes your computer think that the 02 sensor or catalytic converter is bad- so check all of that out. The other is part of the gas-line evaporative system. It too could be a leak, the gas cap not tightened correctly, a break in the line at the charcoal cannister or the evaporator purge valve that is not holding pressure. You'll need the specific codes for this to narrow that one down. Whatever you do, don't disconnect the battery to reset your codes. If you do, you'll have to drive your S80 300-500 miles for it to be "ready" to be checked again.

Was the check engine light on, or were all of the things above "readiness"? Has the battery been disconnected recently? Any recent repairs?
