volvo S60 message

Can anyone tell me what this means? I have a S60 turbo 2001 and I sometimes get a message telling me BULB FAILURE. POSTION LIGHT.
Where or what is the postion light? The vovlo book doesnt help.
I would appreciate if anyone could shed light on this.

I found some related POSITION LIGHT info on the web:

Try this; go to your local Wal-Mart of auto supply store and by 4 aftermarket bulbs that will replace the ones supplied by Volvo. Total cost should be just $3-4.00. Replace ALL FOUR bulbs and see if your problem goes away. I did this last year for the same problem, and it took care of it. For some reason, the system might be sensing a low current, triggering the message. No guarantees, but a quick and cheap shot at it.

Dont forget - the position lights (2 front, 2 side, 4 rear, 2 number plate = 10) and the dipped beam (x2) are on all the time the car is running, on most other cars they are only active at night, and people drive more in the daytime - so whereas a tail bulb on a normal car would last maybe 50-80,000 miles, 12-20,000 is normal on a Volvo, or less! Use quality bulbs, cheap ones seem to cause more headaches, and change them in sets - all 4 tail lamps together, both side lamps, both front together etc.

thanks matthew for your help. I forgot to mention that I only have this problem with the positon light in the summertime. It happened last summer twice and didn't happen again until a week ago. Thanks for your help again.

Sounds like a touchy electrical connection that's affected by temperature. Metal shrinks when cold and expands when hot. Maybe that's why it's seasonal.

Give the bulbs a good pull-out, cleaning, put-back-in job or get new ones.

The "position light" refers to the rear parking light which is easily replaced in the rear light cluster. I have replaced these bulbs on both sides several times on my 2001 S60 T5 (they burn out since they are always on as daytime running lights). I had to call Volvo customer service to find out what was meant by "position light". You would think that that sort of information would be in the manual!

My position light comes on once in a while and i figure out its a loose connector or a loose bulb in the back. I tried taking out all the bulbs in the back and cleaning them and putting them back in. This works but couple months again it comes back.

quick fix i figured out, when this light comes back as position light message I JUST OPEN MY TRUNK AND SLAM IT SHUT AND SWISH IT FIXES IT FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGAIN, HA HA HA.

OR YOU CAN GO THROUGH THE TROUBLE OF CHECKING EVERY BULB AGAIN

Hello to all. Much trouble with 01 s-60 in the last few day's I have 82,000 miles on. Started with Air Mass sensor. Reparied for $380 from dealer now alternator failin. I have also seen this message for bulb falure and no bulb is burned out. Check alternator you may have a current issue save time get alternator checked before you get stranded on the road like I did

had this on my car , couldnt tell what it was all lights seemingly worked, however at a distance found rear lower light not working (there are two bulbs per side at the rear ?reliability through redundancy )

I had the same problem on my 01 S60 this past summer, and slamming the trunk a few times did the trick. Hasn't given me any trouble since!
