Volvo 240 DL Wagon 1986: New Here!

Post by ol bloopy »

Hi, I have a few questions about working on my car:

1. I need to replace the (outer) tie rod ends. I have the parts, however I need to pull the old tie rod ends off my car. I was wondering if I should:

a. Order the special Volvo part that pulls them off: $$$$$ :(

b. Use a cheaper universal tie rod end puller and risk damaging my steering and suspension

c. Use an alternate method and further risk damaging my steering and suspension, and if so any suggestions?

Both NAPA and Sears automotive carry the remover that looks exactly like the Volvo tool. They are both the same brand. It's cheaper through Sears....about $42+ shipping. If you are replacing the tie rods ends in this case it might not make too much difference, but the tools that work by wedging something betweent he steering arm and the tie rod end often tear the rubber boot. If you plan to do car work in the future I would recommend you blow the $42 now. The tool will work on most tie rods and is guraranteed for life.

ol bloopy, welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

As you are replacing the tie rod ends you don't need a special tool. A pry bar and hammer work just as well as shown here:

This is how I have always done it even when re-using the tie rod ends and now have it down to not needing an assistant on the hammer.
