S40(1999)TEMPERATURE GAUGE

Post by shaun-norwich »

hi there, hoping someone can help. on my way to work this morning the temperature gauge on my 1999 reg s40 went up onto the red, never done this before. i stopped and got out and opened the bonnet up. the top radiator hose was very hot and really hard, the top of the radiator(black plastic piece) was very hot also. the bottom hose was still cold and limp like and the radiator veins where also cold. with it being bank holiday and local volvo dealership closed i was wondering if anyone had any ideas. thanks in anticipation.

Welcome to MVS. It sounds like you have a thermostat that is stuck closed. It will need to be replaced. Usually when this is done the temperature sensor that is located in the thermostat housing is also replaced. Doing these 2 replacements will fix your problem. Neither are very expensive and it should not take any shop very long to do it either. If you are handy w/ tools you can do it yourself in 30-45 mins even without prior experience with this.
