89 740 2.3 stalling

Post by nisan17 »

Hi Group,
My sister has an 89 740 2.3 non-turbo, when she starts it, after approximately 10 seconds it dies. Some clown friend of her says it's the Alternator!!?? I was visiting her this past weekend and seen nothing visible.(battery was disconnected and couldn't jump it as the alternator wires were disconnected)

I know it's probably simple, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin,

I'm new to Volvos, but the alternator may not be a bad theory. A car battery will "naturally" regain some charge after it's drained witout the alternator charging it. However, each time you start the car with the battery only you will get a shorter and shorter run time.

When the car dies, does it start right away or need time until it starts again? If it needs time until it starts again, then the battery is not getting charge. Also, if it's not the alternator, make sure something didn't blow out one of fuseable links between the starter and the battery (I don't know if Volvos have them there).

Hope this helps!

Looking at the wiring diagrams there are no fusible links in the alternator/battery circuit.

What other checks were done before "Some clown friend of her" said it was the alternator? Battery cables, alternator belt, voltage at battery with engine stopped and running, specific gravity of each cell. If all of these, and some other checks which involve testing parts of the alternator, were not done the diagnosis may be flawed.
