Engine mount - top

Post by turbotim2 »

I just picked up a new polyurethane bushing for the top engine mount. It did not come with any instruction on how to remove the old bushing from the mount. Anyone have some advice? It looks like it is pressed in.

Idono how the DIY people do it but it can be pressed out or an air hammer works pretty well. You would probably cut it and then bent it out. Also you could just take that bracket off and take it to have it pressed out.

There is a machine shop at carquest right outside Augusta on the west side. It's on the road that goes past Sears, Olympia sport on the left and then a little ways down there are dealerships. It's before the dealerships on the left if you are going out of Augusta. It's where all our heads get rebuilt.

Although, almost any shop should have a press tool..

Great, thanks. I should be able to get it out but wasn't sure if I needed to remove just the rubber part of the old bushing or the steel as well.

When I did mine (94 850) it was pretty easy to press out, so much so that I regretted the effort to remove the mount to take it over to the press. Next time I would try pressing it out with the mount in place by using a gear puller set to "Push" the center part out while "pulling" on the outside of the mount edges. Might have to find a disk of the right diameter to fit in there, but sure easier than unbolting that mount. Another way to do it in place is with a large "C" clamp and a piece of pipe like 2-1/2 inch PVC union coupling large enough for the mount to slip into--you get the idea....then just reverse the setup to press the new one in.......

Just take a hack saw blade and cut it. It comes out easily. Search in the repair section and you will find pic's, etc.

I cut mine out too with a small hacksaw and if you search the site you will find a thread on how to do this. I did the job, it took 45 minutes including the time removing the old bushing.

Instead of pipe flanges I used two 0.5 kg round YORK weights from my son's dumbells, a 6 inch 9.6 mm threaded bolt and equivalent nut and two heavy duty washers. place one weight and one washer on the outside of the mount arm with the bush next and sitting in the opening of the bracket; put in the threaded bolt and then the other weight on the other side of the mounting arm, then the washers and then do it up slowly.

This cobbled-together device worked very well and the car was back in action very quickly. Tips would be not to wind the thing together too quickly and smear a little grease or vaseline on the bushing before you start, it just makes the compressing easier; you should not have to go to the trouble of taking out the whole mount assembly and putting it on a press.

James.

I used a piece of wood cut out of a 2X4... 2 inches in diameter and 1 inch hole in the middle with large washers over that and a oil filter wrench on the other side to push in the old style hard rubber upper torque mount bushing (if you don't want to go poly bushing):
