No one seems to be replying to my speedometer problem. My speedo is out on my 850 but odometer works fine. My guess is the speedo gage itself not the sensor - does anyone know, if the odo is working = the speed sensor is OK, and I should replace the dash cluster instead?
Anyone want to unplug their speed sensor on their 850 and drive around and see if just the speedo quits or odo, or both?
Or point me to a Volvo know-how guy I can talk to on the phone. Thanks.
Connor

Ok, your pleas for help made me go so far as to get up, walk 10 feet to the bookcase and pull out my 850 manual! I need a beer
You may want to remove the sensor and pop it back in... surely it's easier than taking the dash apart to get to the speedo itself -- and you know what they say... "try the easy stuff first."
I haven't pulled my dash ever, but I've read it's pretty involved, and when it goes back you may introduce squeaks or rattles where there were none.
From Haynes Volvo 850 manual:
1. Remove battery
2. Remove air cleaner assmbly.
3. Remove battery tray and detach air cleaner bracket
4. Disconnect teh transaxle main wiring connector on the otp of the transaxle housing. Note the rubber gasket.
5. Remove cable clapms around the cable harness and rubber grommet.
6. Insert a thin screwdriver into the end of the wirring connector housing and depress the retaining catch. LIft cables and sockets out of the connector housing.
7. Pull sockets apart and remove the 2 pin socket containing pins 16 and 17
8. Wipe clean the area around the sensor, then remove the mounting bolt and remove the speed sensor form the top of the transaxle housing.
9. Apply a light coat of grease to the o-ring seal, locate the sensor in position and secure with the mounting bolt. Tighten bolt securely and reverse all other steps.

I am having the same problem, Speedo is jumping all over the place or not working at all, but odometer and trip computer work great. Were you able to track down the issue?

Sorry Fellas - thought I posted that I fixed this. Well I pulled the dash cover off, airbag, etc and pulled out the entire cluster. I took the speedo/odo gage off of that cluster and after looking at the back, decided to jumper some of the connections as they had become corroded.
I replaced all the bulbs and put the cluster back in. It was funny that at first, the speedo was still intermittent, but after 1 or 2 days, it has worked fine - no problems since and 2 seasons have gone by.
Very
with my repair - sorry if you needed the info and didn't get it. The other option I was going to do is send the unit off to a speedo repair place so I could keep my mileage/stock unit, etc. It was going to cost about 1-200 I think.
Happy volvoing
