Everything worked fine until suddenly I switched to hi-beams on the hiway and the wipers came on. Now the wipers come on whenever the headlights are turned on though not in the first position (fog lites?) The wipers will run at the normal OR the faster speed, but not the delay mode. Along with, and possibly related to this, the right high-beam no longer works. I banged on it and it came back a couple of times, same as I managed to stop the wipers by flicking things on and off enough times but now it is permanent, the wipers come on with the headlights. Pulling the wiper fuse deactivates the horn. another annoyance. The engine was replaced with a four, and there are loose wires and connectors everywhere under the hood. It looks like a lot of old wiring will need to be replaced but for the moment Im worried about getting the ^$^%! wipers to stop thinking they are the headlights. - JacoMoto

That is a very interesting problem
The first thing I would check is oxidation or poor contacts at the fuse box. The type of fuses Volvo uses are prone to causing problems with older 200 series. Clean each fuse and the holder carefully, it is worth the time.

Secondly I would be checking and cleaning all the grounds, another common source for problems.

There was a short causing the right highbeam to cut out which was also causing the wiper motor to start. I jiggled the right wires near the headlight and it all went away like magic ! Anyway I love this car. It needs the rear wiper and one rear power window fixed and a couple of door problems worked out, but I just drove it about 6000 highway miles and it was great.
