850 t5 wagon '97 Oil out of cap and dipstick

Post by mcbeav »

I bought a 97 T5 wagon recently with 102,000 miles on it. I noticed oil on the dipstick handle and remembered a problem I had with my old 240, flametrap clogged. Since this model does not have a flame trap I had my mechanic replace the oil trap and related hoses. That being done I do not see any change. It is still blowing oil. Could they have missed anything?
Thanks

Sounds like your PCV system needs to be cleaned. Mine had oil all over the top of valve cover when I bought it. Do you notice a lot of smoke coming out of the tube if you pull out the dipstick handle while the car is running at normal temp?

I just had the whole system cleaned or replaced and still get positive pressure. The oil trap and the hoses were replaced and they said they cleaned and or replaced the nipples. I am wondering if they missed anything

Thanks for the link, that's an excellent write-up with great pics. I wish the guy who wrote it had co-authored the Haynes manual!

The only other thing I can think that I've read about is to make sure they hooked up the lines right to the oil separator:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forum ... =1&t=13999 (about halfway down the page)

Or try running some seafoam through your car and see if that helps it any. I ran this through a Jeep Liberty, and it did wonders for making it run smoother...I have yet to do it to my Volvo, but I would venture to guess that it may loosen up some deposits clogging up your car somewhere other than the PVC.

Maybe MIJ will chime in...he had an 850 that he did everything on, and it still had positive pressure from last I read.

Yeah...still does I think but I finally got the intake manifold gasket in right so maybe not- haven't checked since yesterday and my son is driving it now....I think that in my case, it's over-filled...so check your oil level- it seems to make a difference...

Thanks for all of the information. I passed it all to my mechanic and they still can't figure it out.

Oil level is about a pint low or so as oil has blown out of cap and dipstick.

I guess I will try the seafoam and see if that works.

The Seafoam worked! I poured some in the fuel tank and in the engine. I got smoke out of the tailpipe on a regular basis for a couple of weeks but not now. There is nothing coming out of the dipstick either. I guess it takes a while to work through.
Thanks for the help. The mechanic that did the PCV reinspected it and could not figure anything out. He said I needed a ring job at 102,000. Oil level has remained steady for the last 1000 miles.

You did do an oil change soon after adding SeaFoam to the engine right?
