I have 2001 xc I purchased last summer from a dealer.
In May I brought it back to the dealer due to check engine light being on.
They did 2300 worth of work including replacing the the ETM & updating software (covered by Volvo).
Well my check engine light was on again and I brought my car to an independent volvo mechanic who replaced the thermostat and some other non-engine related jobs.
A day after repair I get the engine needs to be checked message on my car again and bring it back to independent volvo guy.
He plugs it in and said the problem was the EMT and suggested I call the dealer and ask if software had been updated. I called the dealer who reminded me the EMT was replaced and software update and said I needed to bring it in and they'd plug it in at a fee of $88.00 and that he could not go by someone else's diagnosis.
He of course gave me the speil their could be 70 different reasons for engine light to be on.
My concern is I will go back there and they will tell me it is probably a different reason for the engine light going on and even though the ETM code is on ... that is is likly not that.
I am very frustrated at this point and am unsure of what to do.
Any suggestions???

If it's the second ETM gone bad (been known to happen), the good news is that it's still under warranty and they should cover it as long as you're not over the 200K mile mark.

So should I go back to the original dealer, pay another 88 for them to just plug it in?
In the past I have used another dealer ... would it be better to bring it back to the dealer that actually replaced the module or try the other dealer?

It really doesn't matter- whichever dealer you feel most comfortable with. If it is indeed your ETM again (sigh), then they should reimburse your $88 diagnostic fee.

If it were me, I would go back to the original dealer and fork over the $88. Just insist that they print all the fault codes on the work order. You can always call the national number if you feel they're trying to rip you off.
