Help please air con fan keeps cutting out

Post by smiggy_ »

Hello every one.

I have recently brought an 850R and am having some probs with the heater/air con fan.

If the engine is off the heater fan works on all speeds and dose not cut out but with the engine on as soon as i take it by half way 5 secs later it cuts out and will not start again until you switch the engine off.

Even when it is on low it blows warm.

Any ideas ?????

Regards

Just to be clear....is it the blower motor mounted behind passengers side dash board that is cutting out....or is it your air conditioning compressor.

Some suggestions for both:

A. Climate control fan: I had to replace mine a few years back. Would work then quit etc etc. Per Haynes manual or other posts here, I dismantled everything to get to motor. Motor turned freely etc but would only work sometimes on bench test. Brushes were good, then I discovered where brushes make contact with rotating armature of the motor...stator contacts I think, those copper strips were virtually worn down to nothing...hence intermittent operation...and no way to repair. Ordered new motor from Groton or IPD...pulled off fan assembly from old motor and reinstalled all. Now all is fine.

OR: Could be fan motor resistor pack that is malfunctioning or could be short circuit in wiring for fan and resistor pack etc etc. Only way to determine is to pull everything out and bench check.

B. If problem is intermittent A/C compressor most likely due to age and the A/C clutch is not staying engaged...assuming you have proper quantity of R134. A few years back my A/C would only blow cold air if I had fan on top speed ala #4 position for manual system. You know cost of new compressor....ouch. What I discovered here or on other forums was way to add shims to A/C clutch plate. Relatively easy to do.....now my A/C works on all fan speeds.

C. If you are referring to fans attached to front portion of car ala behind radiator which pull in more air, could be a relay or sensor.

Hope this helps you narrow down your problem.. Chuck

The ECC head located in the dash:

You might want to pull out the head, unclip the three bundles of wires, and clip them back in. There is some kind of button on the bottom of mine, which I pushed in for good measure. And yes, there hasn't been an issue since.

But there are other issues I'm working out.
