240 classic 1993 transmission

I have a 1993 240 with a 5speed. It goes into 1st gear with great difficulty after stopping. The car has 175k and the clutch is original but sound. Is there a common problem with syncros in the Volvo 5speed?

HI Steve,

I don't know about any known sychro problems. But there are other factors that can cause a hard first. It sounds like you aren't having problems with other gears? The pilot bushing/bearing can cause this. If it isn't seized but just drags it becomes less noticible as you drive. But it's a bear to put in gear at a stop. For that matter a dragging clutch can do this. Remember when you are stopped the input shaft has to stop, when you move it only has to slow enough to match the next gear. You may subconsciously match speed using the engine.
