2001 S40- fluid changes?

Post by AlanS »

My son came home with his 2001 S40. 80,0000 miles. I think I will do a full fluid change, in that he will never get around to it. I will do oil (Mobil 1 10-30), brake fluid, anti-freeze. But the bigger question is: Do I change the tranny fluid? If so, is there a BEST fluid to use? And, would this be the same recommendation for my 95 - 850?

Yes, at those miles I would also do a transmission flush. I believe the correct fluid is the JWS-3309 compliant fluid and not Dexron/Mercon (like 850's), but check the owner's manual to be sure. There is a good write-up on how to do the flush in the repair database- just look for "modified transmission flush." It is for other Volvo's but I believe the procedure is the same for the '01 S/V40's.
