2001 Volvo XC-70

Post by BBsebens »

Hey,
My name is Brenna, I am a new person to this forum. I am hoping to find an answer to this very puzzling topic. If you can figure this out I will be ever so thankful. We have quiet a few volvo specialty shops in Bellingham, WA and they have all looked at this car and are scratching their heads.

Hears the quick story:
Bought 2001 volvo xc-70 (110,000 miles) and was told I needed new brakes/rotors. I ordered them online and when they came in my husband and his friend changed them. I had driven it earlier that day and it was perfectly fine. As soon as my husband changed the brakes and we first pulled it out of the driveway the car started hard shifting. It has a VERY hard shift from 2nd to 3rd gear.
We were concerned it was the allwheel drive and had it towed to the best volvo shop we could find. Once there they found a ATF leak and fixed it and did a transmission flush. They were concerned that it had "varnished" the inside since the fluid was older. After this flush the problem continued and the shop recommended a new transmission (we have owned the car for 2 weeks now, and btw had it checked out prior to getting it).
Since this is such an expensive deal we decided to do our research. We checked around and have taken it to 3 shops, one was even a volvo transmission specific shop. Everyone is scratching their heads.
It has the newest version of the software, although it seems like it is a computer issue more than anything.
Can anyone shed some light on this? How is this related to the brakes, I can't believe that it is simply a coincidence.

Thanks so very much!

HI Brenna, I to have a 01 V70 XC and have had tranny problems with mine as well.
And like you it was non existenet prior to me buying it and showed up within the first month  And as you know it's very discouraging.
I was lucky to have baught an aftermarket warranty with the car and had the tranny rebuilt at 90miles. I think I still had to pay around 1000$ dollars though. MY torque converter was fried and the valve body was malfunctioning.
The car has been running fine since"about 2 years" and has 141miles on it now. I really fell in love with the 850 series volvo and had to stay optimistic with the XC as well. Although they have a bad reputation in 2001.
Im gonna have to say that your brakes have nothing to do with the tranny problem. Just doesn't make sence to me.
I love my XC on icy roads with studded tires and feel safe hauling the entire family around in it.
I wish you the best of luck in figureing out your car. :D

Hate to be the bearer of bad news. ALL 2001 trannies eventually go bad, they're junk.

Do a search and read about them.

You probably will need a new tranny, the brake deal is probably a coincidence.
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

I have the same car, 90,000 miles it shifts back n forth a lot when on a slight hill but other than that It shifts fine. If the transmission eventially go out what mileage does this happen at and what happens first.
