I recently have a problem with my 2004 Volvo S80 which has 51k miles. When I go to start the car, it having a problem turning over. If it fails on the first time, it has no problem starting on the second try. Orignally I though it was the battery, since it is the original battery and I live in Phoenix where it is hell on batteries. So I went and bought a new battery without question it. I installed the new battery and I had the same exact problem.
Since it seemed like it wasn't getting enough air to the engine, I thought air filter. What I had found out was the 2 different dealships that I had the car serviced at never has replaced the air filter (the have done the cabin filter twice now), but never recommended having the air filter replaced (which I thought they were doing as part of the normal maintenance). So I went and bought a new air filter and installed it. Still have the problem.
The intresting part of this, almost to the day that I have been having problems starting the vehicle, there has been an odor almost like a paint order. I have tested the battery using a volt meter; before I start the car it reads 12.5V after starting the car it reads 14V.

Starter motor or solenoid I'd guess. But could be a glitch with the security system too I suppose.
