XC70 2001 Turbo problem??

Post by mags3311 »

I have noticed over the past few months that my 01 XC70 w/125k has used approx 3-4 qts of oil in the past 3,000 miles. I also noticed that there is a moderate amount of blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe. There are no oil leaks showing on the garage floor. The motor also sounds normal when it's running. I am not driving it until I figure out what the problem is. Does this appear to be turbo related?
Thanks for any help!

It could be but

first you need to check the flame trap (PCV) by pulling the dipstick and seeing if air is being pushed out. If so you will need to change it.

If it is not -double check by putting a thin rubber glove over where the oil cap goes (take it off) if the glove is being sucked in then you are ok -if it is being pushed up you have positive pressure and need to find the issue in the flame trap.

If its not that
It is either the rings or the turbo.
If it gets much worse when you are accelerating its probably the rings . If it is worse at idel then it is probably the turbo.

Let us know how the checks go and how you resolved it.

Update on initial question. We ordered a new pcv kit, upon taking the old pcv out, it appeared to be ok. There was no evidence of carbon or plugged hoses. We are going to install the new pcv, and then take the car out and drive it, and see how the turbo sounds/reacts when it is engaged. Again, any other suggestions would be much appreciated. I am preparing myself for the fact that it may be turbo related.
