How to put shift selector in D with Key out of ignition XC70

I am removing the control panel infront of the climate control panel to replace light bulbs. It says to place the shifter in the far rear position in order to remove this panel but the key is to be off for 3 minutes before starting work. Does anyone know how to do this. My older model had a button to push on the shift console.

Just a follow up I removed the temp control panel had to put the shift selector in D to remove this panel and just left the key in the switch. The reason I was taking it out was because I had two bulbs out on that panel. It took me about a half hour to get it ripped apart and put back together. I guess I could have disconnected the battery but didn't want to clear all the computors in the car of there memory. That puts your transmission back into the learn mode and everything, It actually learns how you drive.
