Volvo 850 Turbo - Blown Head Gasket

Post by joemay »

Greetings,
Would someone please help me? I would like to know the valve adjustment, headbolt torque, and cam timing before I start this project. Also, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I moved you to the appropriate forum so that you can get a quicker response.

There is no valve lash adjustment per se, the valve springs have limitations but they normally aren't a problem. The head bolts are torqued in 3 stages:

Stage 1 - in order - is 15 lb/ft.
Stage 2 - in order - is 37 lb/ft.
Stage 3 - in order - is an additional 130 degrees.

The valve timing at #1 TDC and the tools to hold the cams there are well described in the Haynes manual. Don't even try to do the job without the manual.

One other good resource is available on the site from here:

Joe,

Congrats! That's quite a job to undertake. Did you do any other work while the head was off? I'm thinking of crankcase ventilation components, timing belt, water pump, and that sort of thing.
