2006 S40 Acceleraton Lag (2.4l non Turbo)

Post by S40Sunny »

Just purchased an end of lease 2006 S40 with 77000 kms. When I accelerate from a dead or slow stop there is a hesitation or lag before the engine reacts. It often causes me to over accelerate because the engine is not reacting to the initial pedal movement, so you push further. Does the S40 suffer from bad Throttle Position Sensor adjustments or could this be a defective TPS or computer software issue? (I miss the days when an actual cable was attached to the throttle body).

Appreciate all comments/advice ... my warranty expires in 3000 kms. Thanks

I too have a 2006 S40 (2.4i).

I am having exactly the same problem with my Volvo. Luckily for me I still have 2 years on my maintenance plan. I took my car to Volvo 3 weeks ago. They ran a diagnostics test and told me that they could not find any problems. They intimated that it could be due to the fact that I was due for a service in 4000 kms.

With me being a complete novice at motor vehicles, I took their word for it. I am now 3000 kms away from a service and the problem seems to be getting worse. Half the time I stall the car because of the delay between throttle pedal and engine response. Under acceleration, it feels as though I am towing a 5 ton truck. I literally have 1.6i vehicles leaving me for dust. In 4th gear, at relatively high revs, there seems to be an engine shudder as well. My engine also sounds like it is pinging/tapping when idling.

I then found this forum site and boy am I glad. I thought that it might be an isolated incident, but I am thankful that it isn't. Could it be a faulty ETM that is causing the problem? I see that Volvo had a problems with ETM's a few years back.

If anyone has any ideas, please could you let us know.

Thanks
