S40 Wheel Bearings
S40 Wheel Bearings
I'm in the process of changing the front pads and rotors on a 2001 S40 and thought I would change the wheel bearings as the car has over 80,000 miles and it and I'm not sure when the bearings were last replaced. To get to the bearings do I have to take the wheel hub off? I've got the rotors off and trying to take this large nut off that holds the wheel hub on but the hub free spins when I turn the nut. What is the best way to get to the bearings?

Not only do you have to take the hub off but you need a hydraulic bearing press to remove/replace the bearing.
Is there any play in the bearings? They aren't a service item and are usually only replaced when there is a problem with them. You can check for play by jacking up the car with the wheel studs still tight. Grasp the top and bottom of the tyre and push/pull on the tyre. Any play can be felt.

Thanks Bill,
I don't have any issues or play in the bearings. I did as you suggested and pushed/pulled on the tires with the car jacked up. I checked with a Volvo mechanic yesterday and he told me the same thing. I'm just used to repacking or changing the bearings when I change rotors on other cars.
