has anyone heard of replacing the fixed orifice on a manual climate control with a variable orifice? some places such as Autozone show them as interchangeable. are there any advantages? are they even compatible?

Well, for one thing, most likely you aren't going to have the temperature sensors that let the automatic one regulate the cabin temperature. My VADIS stopped working for some reason or I'd double-check, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't install the sensors with a manual climate control. No benefit really - they more or less do the exact same thing, it's just a fancy "luxury" thing.
