1989 760 turbo wagon...car set up for 3 or 4 years. Got most every thing that didn't work back to operational level except for front wipers, (back one works) and a/c blower motor.
Blue a/c light, whether in or out flashes continuously. Freon level is ok. Auto gets cold but no source of out put can be found.
On my car there are a bunch of relays on passenger side, left knee (after removing protective shield). Could one of these be the problem? If so what is the designated letter of relay?
Can you help me? I'm afraid you'll have to talk to me like I'm a third grader as I am not a profficent mechanic.
thanks
marty

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
There is a relay for the front wipers. All the relays are listed in the first attachment. However, have you checked fuse #20?
The flashing light on your Electronic Climate Control (ECC) panel is telling you that fault codes are stored in the system. The second attachment explains how to read these codes.
Bill.

The only way to learn is to try. If you don't understand something ask for clarification. We aim to help.I'm afraid you'll have to talk to me like I'm a third grader as I am not a profficent mechanic.

bill,
Okay, thanks for the info. Was very helpful and relevent. Now, here's the real show stopper...
All of a sudden, after idling for several minutes, and multiple tries to get the code thing working, all systems that weren't functioning, a/c blower motor including motor fan speeds, windshield wiper motor, started to work.
It was all good until I turned car off and after starting it again, nothing worked except the motor and guages. Nothing has affected the starting of car. It idles so smooth and when the a/c comes on it idles down for a split second then recovers nicely. I have double checked most if not all of the fuses several times and all are working. When I checked the wiper relay, by sounds of clicking noise when engaging wiper stem it seemed to be functioning when all other systems were going strong and at the same time. That is until I turned off and re-started.
I never could get the blue code flasher to flash. It was all or nothing.
thanks in advance...

Now that it appears that the fault(s) are intermittent you may have a problem in the electrical portion of the ignition switch. Start the engine and if the faults are still there try jiggling the ignition key, without turning it, to see if the faults cure themselves again. If the faults aren't there on this occasion you could wait and do this check if they should re-appear. However, to help them make up their minds you could try jiggling the key to see if you can induce the faults.

Hi Bill,
Damned if you weren't spot on with the jiggling of the ignition key.
I didn't realize that there was so much slop in it. It seems that moving it in and out causes the intermittancy. I guess the thing to do, without major work and expense, is to pay attention and keep it in check while operating vehicle. It is almost as if someone has tried to force key out of slot without turning it to the proper off setting.
I am most grateful and thankful to you and your site for being available to novices like myself.
You and your partners can expect a contribution from me in the near future.
Again, thanks for everything...

Marty, you are welcome.
If the problem gets too bad you can buy the electrical portion of the ignition switch without the rest of it. All of our sponsors at the top of the forum supply them. Fitting isn't too difficult.

Hi Bill,
I just had to tell you that I replaced the electrical part of the ignition switch as well as the key part. As I was toggling around with the key it literally came out of socket in all positions without too much tugging.
Total cost of parts was $123 and about 2 hours labor.
The hardest part of the replacement was getting the new cylinder to seat properly. Seemed to take forever, but after patiently taking out and putting in a hundred times it finally slipped right on in. Don't ask me what I was doing wrong or what I finally did right, it just sorta happened.
So, once again I thank you for your time and knowledge...
