What to buy S70 or S40?

Hello everyone

I live in Australia & am looking at buying a Volvo as it has been reviewed as a very safe car.

I am looking at 97-99 models as these fit my price range of up to AU$8,000. I am trying to decide between the S40 & the S70. Which one is more reliable?

Also what kms with the Volvo? One of the cars I looked at had 180,000km on it which is high for a car but apparently not for a Volvo...

I don't know anything about cars so any advice will be greatly appreciated!

I own a 2000 S40 - purchased new... it now has 165,000miles (USA) - still looks/runs good.

Nonetheless, I would buy an S70 - the 70 is a bigger car and from what I've seen (over here) appear to be driven longer by their owners.

If you decide on an S40, go for a more recent model (with slight improvements in design and comfort than the early 1999 - 2003 models).

I have an S70. Its a 98, and i believe my father bought it in 2001, and gave in to me in 2008. Its got 121,000 miles (sorry im no good a converting to km). I recently bought a 94 850 (which is very similer to an S70) and it has 210,000 miles on it. Both cars run great and have no major problems. Ive never had an S40, so i couldnt say about that.

See my thoughts on my mom's V40:
Volvo V40
and
V40 vs V70

V40 and S40 are the same car except of course the V is the wagon.
