2-second choking/sucking sound after cold engine start

2-second choking/sucking sound after cold engine start

I recently noticed some weirdness in my 1996 Volvo 850 GLT. About 3 seconds after a cold engine start, there is a choking/sucking sound that lasts for no more than 2 seconds. :? It doesn't happen if the engine's warm. Any idea? I think it may be related to the starter tring to stop, but not sure.

I have the starter replaced and it's fine now. My mechanic says the old one doesn't disengage from the gear immediately after the engine starts.
