S60 2002 Transmission sticks and then jumps

S60 2002 Transmission sticks and then jumps

Car has 103,000 miles. About 6 months ago, the transmission started sticking and then jerking strongly at acceleration. Local repair shop says that flushing would be expensive and may make the problem worse. I bought the car in 2004 and have never flushed the transmission

He went to a recent workshop and discovered there may have been a recall on 2001/2002 S60 transmissions. Does anyone know if this is true?

He says a flush would take 16 quarts. Volvo fluid is approx. $20 a can. Mobil 1 is a little cheaper. But, again, he's very reluctant to do it. Says removing any "muck" from the system may cause the gears to slip sooner and precipitate the need to rebuild the transmission. He also says that every part in a volvo transmission is contained within it and opening it may still not reveal the problem. He said that he'd have to open it and replace all the parts for about $2700 plus labor.

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

There's no recall, there are software updates.
I agree with him, at 100K you should do two or three drain and fills, do not disturb the crud inside.
Each drain and fill will get out about 3-4 quarts, three of these should get out most of the old fluid
3309 IS Volvo fluid, made by Mobil, rebottled for Volvo and sold for 3-4 times the actual cost!
You can also use Toyota type VI, same stuff, 3309, 5 bucks a bottle right at the (Toyota) dealer.

After you do the drain and fills, get any available software downloaded at Volvo, have them reset the adaptions and do a new drive cycle.
Not much more you can do. If this doesn't work you are looking at a new or rebuilt tranny.
