95 960 Transmission

1995 960

Hello All,
I have two questions:

1) What automatic transmission do I have in my car? Do all 9XX inline 6 have the same transmissions?

2) I am starting to hear a very faint whine that is unrelated to the engine. I also have had a bit of rough shifting, where it clunked a couple of times out of 1-2.

Question 1 is prompted by an "anonymous" parts supplier.

Question 2 is like when your child is just starting to get sick. Something is wrong but you can't put your finger on it yet.

The oil is nice and red, and it is slightly above the suggested level.

1. All 960 and S/V90 models have the AW 30-40 box. This box has a self diagnostic capability which can be accessed through the data link connector in the engine compartment using port #1.

2. For an automatic transmission to function normally, the fluid level must be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick. If the fluid level is low, the transmission may slip or engage slowly. If the level is too high, the fluid can become mixed with air (aerated) causing shifting problems, slippage and noise. I suggest you get some fluid out of the box and see if it improves.
