We are looking at a 01 V70 with 110K miles here in the Atlanta area. Long story short we are trading in our trusted 04 Yukon for the V70. We want to get rid of payments and get a safe family car that gets good mileage. Our other chioce is a honda minivan. We'd much rather have a V70 in our driveway, especially my wife.
Question is, what are we getting into? I've heard repairs on 100K Volvos can be pretty high. However, why do I always see Vovlos out there with 200K plus on them and owners swear by them.
Any info to help in our decision would be most appreciated.

Help. Buying a 01 V70
I have an 01 V70 XC. It is the same car as you are looking at just with more ground clearence.
I have had the car 2 years now, it had 88miles on it when I baught it and now has 148miles.
The only major expence I have had with this car was the transmission. It was basically failing since the day I baught it, but it was an ebay purchase and I wasn't able to test drive it.
I did have the transmission rebuilt and luckily I paid an extra 1000$ for a 36mile warranty. So the transmission rebuild was covered there.
Other than that I replaced 2 coil packs and the o rings in the oil pan "due to lack of maintenance form previous owner"
So I recommend getting your traansmission fluid checked before buying "should be pink not brown" and just try to feel it out and see if it has been well maintained. service records etc.
Overall I am very happy with our 01 V70.
Good luck

2001 was the first year of Volvo's new P2 chassis and, as a result, had a few design flaws that were addressed in later models.
The Electronic Throttle Module wiil fail, you guess when. I replaced mine at 70k miles. After much sturm und drang Volvo created a 100k extended warranty on the ETM. There's a thread on this forum about it.
The Brake Vacuum Booster needs replacement about 70k. Check to see if its been addressed in any V70 you want to buy.
The ABS module will need replacement or rebuilding before 100k or thereabouts.
The Aisin-Warner transmissions are notoriously weak in 2001 V70s. The Stop/Neutral function must be disabled by a dealership shop (proprietary software) to prevent damage to the tranny. ATF should be flushed every 30k to prolong life of the transmission. Mobil 3309 or Volvo's own label (same stuff, higher cost) must be used.
There's a recall out on the radiator fan. Something about it catching fire. Check to see if that's been replaced.
Headlight, taillight and turn signal bulb changes require a contortionist's talents to replace.
The intake grill to the Climate Control interior temp fan requires periodic cleaning.
I've had my 2001 V70 T5 for going on 5 years know. In spite of the maintenance requirements, I like driving it and working on it. If you do your own repairs and are willing to learn about the car's idiosyncracies, you might be happy. Be sure to find out what's been R&R'd by previous owners. Ask to see maintenance and repair records.
Maybe JRL will chime and recommend that you look for a later model year. He might even be able to help you find one. I'd listen to whatever he has to say. Same for Made in Japan & vegasskier. Good luck!

Well I only had to replace the tranny. None of that other stuff. Maybe I have a good one... or you have a bad one.

We have an '01 S60 and '02 V70, both FWD, pretty much the drivetrain as the car you are looking at cmorris.
The S60 has 90K on it and other than brakes, tires, oil changes, spark plugs and a few bulbs, we haven't done anything else to to.
The V70, 104K miles, replaced the alternator, J-pipe for the evap cannister, brakes, tires, have to do the timing belt in a few weeks, bulbs,
have random SRS code reset (known problem Volvo won't address), and a few other nickel dime things. The S60 seems like a better built car than the V70.
