Newbi to the forum but have benefited from your insights on my former 850.
My wife's 2000XC just started to stall immediately after starting, will crank but won't fire unless it sits for awhile (hours). I can sometimes catch it before it stalls, keep the idle up and it then will run fine but am afraid it is going to strand her. Appreciate it if you can point me in the right direction(s).

Dave, since yours is 00's post to the 92-00 board might get you more help there.
Anyhow, I think your problem sounds like fuel delivery issue. This is what I posted the other day (https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 82#p105282):
1, Do you have fuel? That gives you confirmation of either you have problem of fuel delivery system preventing you from start or not.
- If your fuel pressure(FP)>40psi at the Schroeder valve on the end of the fuel rail, then the fuel delivery is not the one (go to 2).
- If you have no or low FP, do you hear the "buzzing" sound when your key is turned to pos II? (1) if its no, jump your fuel pump relay (2) still no, give a smack at the bottom of your fuel tank see if your pump comes alive (a new pump should be ordered ASAP); (3) still nothing after smacking, check your pump getting power or not and see if it works with direct 12v.
2, Do you have sparks?
-if no, check your codes and post back what you got.

Thanks - Didn't realize I was in the wrong forum. Dropped in a new set of plugs, check the FP relay (connectors and soldier joints looked like new out of the box) and FP. FP was only ~ 35psi at the rail. While it fired off immediately, later on it seemed to start hard...cranking longer than normal. Wondering if fuel pumps die slowly, loosing pressure or all at once. Thoughts on next steps?

Fuel pumps are normally kinda binary, they either work correctly or they don't work at all. The fuel pump relay does get intermittent as it fails and it also gets temperature sensitive. (At least they do on an 850).Wondering if fuel pumps die slowly, loosing pressure or all at once.

Sounds like how the fuel pump relay went on my Saab...it would work perfectly fine, then I'd turn the car off and it'd suddenly not start again. I'd come back to it a few hours later, and it would work like nothing ever happened. Took me weeks to track down. Of course, it never had a problem when it went to the mechanic.
Next time it does this, try jumpering the leads on the relay and see if the car will start again. If so, you know that's your problem without just throwing parts at it.

I had a very similar issue with my 99 V70. Mine was throwing a code P1081 which pointed to a couple of possibilities. The description on the code reader described an air metering error and my mechanic guru said to replace my MAF sensor to fix that. However, he also mentioned the immobilizer ring in the ignition switch and how that can go bad producing a start/stall problem.
Several folks here recommended cleaning my MAF sensor with electrical cleaner (NOT BRAKE OR CARB CLEANER), CRC makes a MAF cleaner spray for $6. Remove the sensor, spray it with the cleaner and let it air dry completely. Do not touch the wire element inside, it is fragile.
My start/stall problem went away after cleaning the MAF sensor. If it comes back, I will replace the immobiliser ring next.
