trany fluid on 2006 V70..any synthetic will do?

Post by chef »

Hi guys, i was thinking of doing my tranny fluid. i was at the stealership this week and they're asking $300.00 (cdn) for the job. I went to my local garage and they charge $220.00 for it. The fluid they us is a synthetic fluid. i know the recommended one is the mobil 1 - 3309 fluid, but will any synthetic oil work well?
thanks

Sorry - no
It must meet the JWS 3309 spec and there are synthetics that do and sythetics that do not. Make sure you use one that does meet the jws 3309 spec.

ExxonMobil (Esso in Canada, right?) 3309 is the same stuff as in the Volvo OE bottle.

"Synthetic" is not essential for this product, but if you must have it, Mobile 1 ATF in North America is now JWS 3309 compatible.

Mobil also sells Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF which is JWS 3309 compatible.

Data sheets:
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... F_3309.asp
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... ic_ATF.asp
http://www.mobil.com/USA-ENGLISH/Lubes/ ... le_ATF.asp

Mobil 3309 has a higher -40C viscosity than Mobil 1 ATF, the latter should pump better in the dead of winter at start-up. The Multi Vehicle ATF and Mobil 1 have very similar key specs.

For the record though, labeling laws being what they are in the US, all three of these could could be built off the same lubestock as Mobil 1 ATF and called synthetic.

I recently when throught this and ended up using the Volvo ATF 1161540 fluid.

The only 3309 fluid made by Mobil available in Canada is the Mobil Super 3309, It is available from Canadian Tire for around $9.00 per litre.

The Canadian versions of the Modil synthetic ATF and Multivehicle ATF and for that matter the Castrol Import Multivehicle are not the same as the USA versions. They are chemically different and not approved for transmissions requiring 3309.

The Volvo Dealer in Pointe Claire uses the BG synthetic fluid and you can buy a 16 litre box from them for $120.

I found the Amsoil synthetic ATF at an auto parts on Hymus for $19.00 a litre.

If you introduce these other fluids into the transmission you must do a full flush to make sure there is no chemical reaction between the different oils. A flush requires between 12 and 16 litres of oil.

After all of this research, I negotiated the dealer down to under $23.00 CDN per litre and because there is no problem mixing oils when you use the Volvo 1161540 ATF you only need to do a drain and refill which requires only 3.5 litres.

It ended up costing me around $110 Canadian for 4 litres of oil and the aluminum washer for the drain plug to do a drain and refill.

If I had changed to the Mobil Super 3309 it would have cost me more and the flushing process is quite a bit more complicated.

What is important to realize is that you need to maintain the condition of the oil over the life of the car, A drain and refill replaces about 50% of the fluid in the transmission.

If you do a regular drain and refill at 40,000 km (25,000 mile) or 2 years right in the middle of the heat of summer your fluid will remain in excellent condition.

The average annual cost is the same as one tank of gas.

Hope this helps
