2007 s60 front brake pads

Post by ssgrock3 »

brakes were getting thin, so purchased some EBC pads online. Dang things are the loudest squeeking things I have ever heard. Called the cr dept they tell me to let them break in for 1000miles, never heard of that before. Squeeking driving me nuts. Any suggestions? I have went and bought volvo pads but if I can salvage these I would rather return the dirty $112 volvo pads.

Did you bed the brakes after you installed them? Also what kind of brake grease did you apply? Bedding the brakes will alleviate some squeal and brake grease is an absolute must if you want to keep them quiet.

no did not do either one. what is bedding and does the grease go between the caliper and back of the pad? what type/brand of grease? I have never had to do this with any other model of car and never experianced brake squeel, is this something that just happens with volvos for some reason?

Bedding isn't particular to Volvo's, it's recommended for all vehicles, and brake grease is available at any parts store which leads me to believe that it is relatively common on cars other than Volvo. Bedding is the process of getting the new pads accustomed to the rotors to allow for better braking. It's done by braking from 60mph to 10mph between 10 and 20 times, or however long it takes for the new pads to firmly grip the rotor. Brake grease, such as Syl-Glide or brake disc quiet, prevents vibrations from the brake hardware which causes squealing. It goes on the back of the pads, in between the pad and the caliper, as well as on any moving parts, i.e. the slots where the pad slides back and forth along the caliper. I will add that my Volvo has never had quiet brakes but other users say they have never had a problem with theirs. Hope this helps. Volvo also makes a white break grease that is apparently really good. You could try calling up the parts department and asking about it.
