smoke out of the exhaust

Hello All, I have a 89 740 turbo which leaks oil at the turbo. I've read a lot of posts all over the internet about possible causes. I've found that a common problem is the oil return line leaking. However with so much smoke coming out of the tail pipe and not much from the engine compartment, I think that it is internal to the turbo itself. It is leaking sooo much that it actually starts to drip from the top rear of the turbo. Does this mean that the turbo needs to be rebuilt? Or is it just a seal internal to the turbo? Or, can it be only the return line (I hope)? Thanks in advance.
