1996 S850 Wagon ABS light on intermittently

Post by MareJanee7 »

Is there a danger of my brakes failing completely? Occasionally I feel a buzzing sound in the brake pedal when I begin to apply pressure on the pedal. :?

The buzzing is from the ABS pump priming up, no worry over outright brake failure as a result of ABS system failure. ABS module failure is a very common item on these cars, read the following: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?p=46827

Most people here will agree that a module rebuild is more reliable than a brand new unit.

After reading and looking over the attachment about the module rebuild, I'm not sure I can do it. The mechanics had told me it would cost about $1400 to replace the module. With labor what it is, I wonder if it will cost more than that to get a rebuild done. Do you have a guess or do mechanics even do the rebuild?

I'll have to think this one over and try to get my courage built up enough to try the rebuild if that seems to be my best option.

Thank you very much. MareJanee7

There are several re-builders that can fix the module. Victor Rocha, Module Masters, etc. and they do it for under $150.00.

Victor's site has a good tutorial on how to remove the module to ship it to him.

Even without the ABS module at all the brakes will still work fine - you just won't have ABS.

You can also buy a rebuilt module from FCPGroton or IPD etc for around $200. Just get a mechanic to remove the old module and send it in for the core refund, and have them install it as well if you want. $1400 is EXTREME, even the Volvo dealer in Regina would do it for less than $900. The OEM modules are all defective with poor soldering, the only way to permanently fix this is to get it rebuilt, so generally the rebuilds are better than the new parts from Volvo.

If you're feeling ambitious you can also do it yourself for free. :D

+1

Pull the module, resolder bad joints and put it back together (and dont forget the sealant). Not a major task (a little harder than the Brake Position Sensor though).

What codes are you getting?

Honestly I attempted to repair my own module and it was a sucky job! So hard to get the module open, then my soldering gun was a piece of krap 15w, so I used a butane torch. This is NOT for the average person in my mind.
