240 1986 turn signals suddenly stopped working

Post by Jeff1964 »

Been a while since I have visited here- thanks for this website! :o

Three days ago I realized that the turn lamps were no longer flashing when I wanted to turn. I checked the hazards and they work, so my relay is okay. Could this problem be my turn signal / hi-beam switch? (The fuse is not blown).

The turn signals and hazard lights do work through the same relay but from different terminals. Give the relay a good hard flick with your finger to see if something is stuck. I have known the relay to stop working on turn signals but not hazards and vice versa.

Before changing the turn signal switch spray it with a switch cleaner to see if it is just dirty.

Thanks for the prompt reply Bill-

I tried the switch cleaning but that did not work- so I went to the fuse panel again and took the #13 fuse out. Lo and behold it was a 'hider'- the ends were blown but not the middle! Now they work fine...

No more sticking my left hand out in sub-zero weather to indicate my intention to turn.

Merry Christmas,

Jeff :D

That was a cheap repair. :)

Having been caught out by a hidden break in a fuse some 45 years ago I now use an ohmmeter on any fuse I am checking to ensure continuity. For those who doubt it, cars of that age did have fuses. Some had as many as four!!!

Thank you for the update.
