Replacing front right half axle, ball joint boot is split and flat, can I replace just the boot, ball joint seems good, 220,000 miles, original control arm and ball joint.

You can replace just the boot, yes, but it's just as much effort to go ahead and replace the entire axle, and preventative maintenance so you won't have to do it again. The decision is up to you.

Others will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe you'd have to replace the conrol arm if the ball joint has failed.....(remember the "stay away from ScanTech" mantra).

Sorry, I read CV joint this morning for some reason
I'd replace the whole control arm anyway, pretty much the same thing said for that...just as much effort & preventative maintenance prevents you from having to do it again...those bolts are probably rusted on like you wouldn't believe too. I'm not even sure if they sell the boot there separately, on a quick google search I'm not seeing any.
May as well do the other side too, since you'll have to get an alignment done anyway.

Thank you, I can type with both hands now the right hand still had my greasey glove on...Finished axle, ball joint and control arm next prodject, I thought maybe just the ball joint could be punched out and replaced. But, since these have lasted 220k without problems, I will replace whole control arm with Volvo same part.....Everything really looked pretty good under there.
