V70 XC, 2001, Transmission downshifting

Post by JohnR »

I need to have the transmission checked, and to have the auto stop function removed. While I have the car being checked should I have the 1st to 2nd gear changer solenoid replaced? When the car is warm, and I am driving around town, it is now starting to be a very rough downshift from 2nd to 1st -- the whole car shudders -- very rough.
Your thoughts on this? Car has about 170,00 km, and to the best of my knowledge nothing has ever been done by way of service to the transmission. (And I have read about the inherent problems this year has with transmissions.....)
Thanks for your thoughts.

The Aisin-Warner transmissions in the 2001 V70 are notorious as the weakest component in the vehicle. You might want to check the transmission fluid for color (pink good, brown bad) and smell (burnt smell bad). The early P2 cars should have the transmission fluid flushed every 48,000 km or 30,000 miles to increase their longevity. The ONLY fluid to use is Mobil 3309. Volvo sells an expensive version, Toyota sells a less expensive eponymous type, some claim to have purchased JWS 3309 at auto parts stores. I'd start with flushing the trans.
