First off, great forum. Lots of good info on here. Just got a couple of questions. I just bought my wife the 95 thats in my sig. So far, I love this car! The thing is, I have no idea of its maintenance history. The car itself is almost mint, leather is near perfect and all that good stuff, so I can somewhat feel assured that some maintenance has been performed throughout its life. With 83k miles, what should I do as far as maintenance. Assuming the timing belt/chain has never been changed, should I go ahead and do that. Any suggestions on other preventative maintenance I should do? Also, I averaged 22 mpg's on my first tank, mostly city/country road driving. Is that about right?
Thanks everyone,
Ben

Mattherw's home page has a wealth of info. Most topics have some history within the forum so the "Search" also provides a lot of info.
The stock replacement timing belt comes with "Byte" sticker that should have been applied to the outside of the timing belt cover. It will list the milage at the time the belt was replaced - If you do not have one take you car to get the T-belt changed ASAP.
Depending on when your car was manufactured in 95 you will have either OBD I or OBD II type computer. 95 was the transition year. ODB I will have the access port under the hood near the brake booster. ODBII will have the connector under the change holder in the center console.
I highly recomend getting a "Hanes" manual from you local auto parts store. It will outline the recomended service schedule and give some level of detail in most of the repairs that can be performed on your car.
Regular service of the transmission is usually not recomended by Volvo but it is necessary to ensure the life of the trans. The trans is one of the weak links in the 850. I have mine serviced every 25 K miles by my local independant repair (INDY) center utilizing a power flushing procedure.
I get 20-22 mpg around town and in combo driving get about 25. It will cruise at 80 getting 28 MPG running the AC on the interstate.
