Flame Trap/850 sedan
Yet another question..........I have read many posts regarding PCV replacement tasks, I have alittle smoke from dipstick, w/small oil residue from rear main seal. What is the Flame Trap cleaning deal?. Is this an external engine fix or internal? Some posts have said to clean Flame Trap before pursuing PCV replacement. Thanks to all who reply.
here's a good link for a PCV replacement "how to":

Note that this link, as far as I can see, does NOT mention the flame trap. I don't know enough about the PCV system in the 850 really.. In the older volvos, the flame trap is a little plastic or brass piece inserted in one of the hoses coming out of the oil separator box. It's only needed on NA cars, turbos have no need for them.
According to Vadis, volvo seems to call the oil separator box "flame trap" on the 850. Soo... I dunno!

On my N/A cars the flame trap is a plastic piece that looks much like a small sink strainer where the oil trap vents back to the intake pipe before the throttle body. It has a bayonet style clamp that you twist to remove which holds the connection where the flame trap lives.
I just take them out and throw them away. That procedure produces no ill effects and assures that the flame trap will never be plugged up again.
That said, your PCV may still need to be serviced.
