What do you think?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

What do you think?

Post by mjv8507 »

My boss has an 2001 s/80 t-6. He is selling it for $12,000. It has 68,000 miles on it and he has an extended warranty up to 100,000. He said that he originally paid 46,800 for it, but carmax was only willing to give him $12,000. Why does a volvo depreciate so much, so qucikly and do you think I should buy it. I know he took excellent care of it, he is getting rid of it cause he bought himself a 05' range rover(must be nice)

Please advise

From my perspective behind this computer, S80s seem to have a bunch of problems *when considering how much they cost off the lot.*

An almost $50k car should have almost nothing break for a long time in my humble opinion.

S80s have a terrible reliability record. They have many maintenance problems and they are expensive to fix. Compare to a Lexus at a similar original price with much fewer repair problems. People want the Lexus and not the Volvo = no demand for Volvos, so the price plummets.

Volvo will not sell you a shop manual for you to do your own repairs and the dealers charge an arm and a leg to fix anything. There are 9 computers on this car waiting to fail.

Volvo rules in the safety department, though. Show me another manufacturer whose head rests actually protect your head, whose car bodies are made of 5 different types of steel to control crush in a crash, or who uses a shock-absorbing seat to protect you in a rearend collision.

I bought my Volvo at a cheap price because of the depreciation and I'm willing to put up with the maintenance problems to get the safety features. Plus, I'm a half-way decent mechanic and can do some of the repairs myself.

CarMax only gives you a low wholesale value when you sell to them. They turn around and mark it up to retail when they resell it. It's their business. You can do better selling your car yourself to a private party.

I got mine last May. It's a 2000 S80 2.9 with only 56,000 miles on it, and in really good shape. The previous owner took care of it, and it was $10,300, which I didn't think was that much for a car that had a lot of options in it, and with that few of miles. I've had two problems with my S80, both involving glass (rock hitting windshield, sunroof shattering), but nothing else, so far.

My advice: depends on how much you're willing to spend on repairs. Seems like S80s have tons of problems with them, and you'd most likely have to go to the dealer to fix, which will cost 10X what it should.

From what some forum members say, the S80's are not reliable and tend to put all in this category...This is not true at all...The 99's thru 01's did have problems., although certainly not all....I paid $12,000 for mine a year ago last August with 82,000 miles...(An 02 model)The two problems I've had were a in tank fuel pump (This was a factory defect) and a set of brakes...
With the S80 your thinking about, you know the previous owner and thats a plus, plus you will have the extended warranty, thats also good...
I suspect the price your boss is asking is within the ballpark with that low of mileage....Ask your boss if you could drive it around for a day and then you determine if its what you want...The S80 is Volvo's Flagship and I certainly believe a great automobile....
One other thing you should know, the turbo models like the higher octane gasoline even though you can use the 87 grade..I've found mine runs smoother and gets better gas mileage w/ the 91 grade octane...Good luck what ever you decide...
