Service/Repair Manuals for '89 740 16v... help!

Hi I have a 1989 Volvo 740GLE 16v. I know there is VERY little information out there for this car/engine. I've scoured the web, search 40+ pages in on various Google and Bing searches trying to find manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, etc. and have had no luck. I've tried TurboBricks and other forums and they're all full of project cars and tuning and seem to be made up of people that magically have this information already. It seems this is a model that was completely overlooked (because of the scarcity of them I think) by the Chilton and Haynes people. I've seen on eBay many service technician programs you can purchase that claim to have ALL VOLVO CARS PERIOD with all the data known included. They claim it's the same stuff that the dealers use to repair the cars. Anyone have this or any info about whether or not it's legit? I would buy it and buy a PC (since it's only PC-compatible) just to get the 16v info from it, but I'm wary. Any information is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Or if anyone knows how to get a hold of whatever information is used by mechanic shops to fix cars like mine...

The discs on eBay will be VADIS which has no repair information for the 2 or 7 series. Repair information for RWD starts with the 1991 9 series. The 940 used the 16 valve engine in '91 and '92 and there is repair info for that. I have looked quickly through the info and it seems to be comprehensive.

The VADIS discs were used by Volvo until 2005 when they brought in their new system. The discs have been sold on eBay for a long time now and nobody, to my knowledge, has been prosecuted for breach of copyright. If the discs weren't being sold legitimately eBay would have stopped all sales long before now.

If you are thinking of going down this road bear in mind the UK sellers are usually cheaper than the US sellers.

Thanks Bill, So if I understand correctly I could find a manual for '91-'92 9-series from Chilton or Haynes and that would cover my engine? Then I guess for everything else I could just use a closer-year 740 manual for things like lights, steering, electrical, etc... sounds like a good plan - thanks again!

Sorry, in retrospect I think I misunderstood... You're looking at VADIS when you're saying there's comprehensive coverage of the 16v engine under the 940? Or looking at something else?

If you're looking at VADIS and that's what they're selling on eBay, then it seems that would be a goldmine for me as I can just reference the 8v 740 for everything but the engine, and the 940 for the 16v engine. Now I just need to get a PC to run it.

VADIS has comprehensive coverage for the 16 valve engine.

Not only does it cover the engine it also covers electrics, transmission, brakes, steering, suspension, climate units and some body repairs.

Examples of the engine repairs: cylinder head, camshaft seals, balance shaft seals, oil pump replacement, timing belt replacement and many more.

It has been very helpful on my former 940, current 850 and my friend's V40. It has also been consulted for my neighbour's S60 before he took it to the dealer for a repair and he amazed the service manager with his knowledge. His bill was a lot less than was first quoted.

For anyone visiting the page, here's some final info:

The Haynes manual titled "VOLVO 740 & 760 1982 to 1991 (up to J registration) Petrol", which is a UK edition Haynes manual, has a lot of information on the B234f 16v engine. Tons of useful information applicable to the American '89 and '90 760 16v models. As far as I know this is the only book in print that covers this engine for Volvos. I purchased it new from eBay for $40 including shipping from "vw-diy" and had no problems and had it the next week from England.

The ISBN number for the book is: 1 85960 081 6

I have gotten a hold of the VADIS program for Volvos, but have not been able to see it yet, I'll post more if anything pops up.

Thank you for the information.

I often use US publications for UK models, always remembering the driver sits on the other side. There is no technical difference.
