I own a year 2000, S80. about 120k miles.
I had a huge problem when both my turbos failed in my S80. There was oil leaking and it was blowing smoke. I called my trusty mechanic and we were able to find two after-market turbos. (Turns out that alot of the rebuild places can no longer get parts to rebuild turbos). So, my mechanic fixes the car and it seems to run fine.
The only problem? He told me that it took him 18 hours to do the job. I was surprised to hear this. I called my volvo dealer and they said they could do the job in 4 hours (seems a little short).
So, I'm asking for advice: how long should it take to remove and replace both turbos in a year 2000 S80?
Thanks!
Steve

I removed and rebuilt one of my turbos myself, I was able to get a rebuild kit through http://www.gpopshop.com in Arkansas, and they balanced the compressor shaft assembly for me, I put it all back together; total time over several days maybe was 6 or 7 hours. Your mechanic *may* have spent some time cleaning the intercooler if it was full of oil. 18 hours does seem like a lot, but is he including the time he spent to help you find the aftermarket turbos and the leg-work to get them?

Keith,
Thanks for your input. Yes, my mechanic did spend time cleaning out oil from various areas as well as spent time tracking down the replacement parts. Good observations. We did check out www.gpopshop.com and they told us that they can no longer get individual parts from the turbo manufacturer. In my case this was mitsubishi. I suspect that volvo wants you to buy the whole part from them.

Any other thoughts out there about the hours spent on this project?
