New to the Volvo Family

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

New to the Volvo Family

Post by dtropnevad05 »

Well we decided to get our daughter a new used car to replace her 2000 Dodge Stratus. I found a low mileage 2001 S-80 with 43,000 miles on it.
It is a nice car and should get her through her fives years she has left in school.

The only issues I have found are the sun roof does not work, moisture in both headlamps  some stupid trim things, a bad battery and a right front seat belt that locks in place when you put it on. :|

I know the dealer and have been buying cars from him for 15 years. They are going to take care of the seat belt and they put a new battery in it today.

The sun roof is on me so any ideas as to what it could be?
It does not make any sound at all the fuses are good and the local Volvo dealer checked something out to do with the key fobs :? . Whatever they were looking at did not fix it and they say we will need to bring it in. Sound like lots of money to me just to have a sun roof!

I can't figure out how to remove the headlamps so I ordered the Volvo Service Manual off e-bay but the copy they shipped will not load :( so they are shipping me out another one.

I'm hoping this turns out to be a good car for her. Any help or ideas you guys have for the sun roof sure would be appreciated. :P

To ease your woes of Volvo being a good car...
My 1996 850 GLT sedan, has 244,444 miles on it. Check the photos of your Volvo. it should be the newest one.

her Volvo is still a baby.
Check to see what the warranty is. if the original owner got the 100k mileage or the 6 year. or what ever it may have been at time of purchase.

If they got the mileage, check to see if you are still within the range.
Will give you a good brake on paying.

As for the sunroof... Did they try the switch?
Might just be a bad switch from spilling something on it.
And did they check the sunroof motor?
I would call them and find out if they did or not.

Can you post a photo or two of the car? always nice to see a newer one.

For the condensation/moisture in the headlights, check this thread; there is an official fix from Volvo:

As for the sunroof not working, see these two links. The sunroof and the alarm module are linked somehow. There is a battery on a circuit board on the alarm module that can leak when it gets old and ruin the contacts:

Search for "sunroof" in the following link and read what "vegasjetskier" has to say about replacing the alarm module and having sunroof function restored.

And, this can't be stressed enough: REPLACE THE TIMING BELT! It's probably never been done on your daughter's car, and the belt is coming up on 9-10 years old. I wouldn't worry about bearings, idler pulleys or the water pump, but the rubber belt is going to need replacing at that age.
