My '86 wagon wont stop squeeling!
My car is making me crazy! It started out just squeeling occasionally when it was cold. After a few min. it would stop. Now it rarely stops. I have had it looked at by a few mechanics and it appears somtime in the past someone disconnected the a/c and reconfigured the belts. So I believe it is the drive belt that is connected to the alternator and no matter how tight they have it, it still squeels. Especially bad if I have any lights, radio, fans on at all. My problem is that I have 3 different opinions of how to handle this. I have put so much money into this car that I am of course tempted by the most inexpensive option at this point, but dont want it to just be a temporary fix and start squeeling again in a week. Has any one dealt with this? Whats the best fix?
Welcome to MVS,
a cool trick that I've used in the past that Bill told me about isolating a squeaky belt is this. One morning when you have some time and an extra set of hands, have someone start the engine and then put a little bit of water on the questionable belt. If the squeak stops, you've found the culprit, else move on, but be sure that you're only hitting one belt with the water so that you can properly narrow it down.
Once you know definitely which belt is causing you an issue we can help you further. If you have any other questions, just ask!
