Timing Belt problem 2000 S40 1.9T(Help I'm stuck !!!)

Post by nfeliz »

I'm working on my brother's S40. The timing belt went on it (because of tensioner) & the compression was kind of low so I removed the head & had it cleaned up-(machine shop). Put it all back together & I can't get it started.

Initially, I tried to use TDC on the #1 piston & I lined up both cams to the 12 o clock. but the crank sfht mark was still way off. Regardless,I still tried to start it after I made sure valves werent going to hit by turning it by hand. I could feel very little compression on start up.

I decided to line everything up by the book & I got more compression. Pistons #1,2,4 had 165psi, #3 had about 130psi. The TDC still bothers me though.

I have 2 suspicions.

1- When I took the intake cam off I didn't mark the sprocket. But the guy at the machine shop marked it for me. I wonder if he put it on wrong. (How do you line up the mark on the cam with the sprocket?)

2- The bolts came off of kind easy so I wonder if the previous owner had a timing belt done And maybe he reinstalled the crankshaft sprocket on wrong. Tell me what you think.

Almost forgot- I've moved the crank 1 tooth in each direction just in case I'm off & each time I get different cam or crack shft codes on my OBD II scanner.

I'm not sure if these directions apply to your car, but scroll down in this thread for cam alignment instructions:
