peeling rubber around door handle

I have a 2004 V70 (non-Turbo) and the rubber is peeling from the interior of the door around the door handle. Looks bad. Anyone else have this problem? I'm thinking about just going ahead and taking off down to the plastic underneath or taking the door apart and seeing if there's a piece there that can be replaced. I don't think there's any way to recoat it. Any ideas? Thanks.
