Back in November I sent my failed ETM to Xemodex to be repaired. I installed it myself and since then it has been great and I've been worry free. Until this morning, Jan. 20, 2010.
I start the car, back out of my drive way, and at the stop sign at the exit of my neighborhood the car comes to a stall. It refires but is running very rough (like a failed ETM). It was hunting idle, VERY rough, and when I tried to go, the RPM wouldn't go above about 2 thousand and felt as if it was going to stall any second. Even with foot to the floor. I limp it back to the house and it's running like crap. After a couple of restarts of the engine it finally runs ok. After startup it idled up to about 2000 and slowly fell down to normal. Do you feel it's the ETM or some other problem?
That feeling I had of "not worrying about the ETM" anymore has now disappeared and I'm on eggshells with this car once again.

Could be many things besides ETM. Check Engine light, or any messages?
Can you read your codes?

Please take your car to a Volvo specialist or your mechanic to have the DTC’s retrieved from the car (AutoZone does it for free). Then contact us directly @ 1-888-712-2525 or e-mail at [email protected]
We will be more than happy to assist you further, even if the problem is not related to the ETM.

Stopped by Autozone on the way home and no codes were found. Car did fine on the trip home too. I am going to Louisville, Kentucky in March and planned on taking my own car. I am hesitant to now.
Could this intermittent problem be the MAF? Car has 130,000 miles.

Diagnosing a problem without codes presence it’s somewhat difficult. Going thru the process of elimination is the only logical way to approach it (other than wait for the problem to happen again and have it scanned then). Since there are no codes then I would start with the basics like battery, battery cables and general state of the charging system. Insufficient power supply or excessive voltage drop throws ETM it to limp home mode without codes. We have also seen Main Fuel Management Relay failing, part of its job is to supply power to the ETM. This relay is located in the engine compartment fuse box. What you need to know is that for the ETM to function correctly it will need a steady supply of 12Volts and more importantly minimum of 5Amps.
As a general rule sensors and components controlled by the ECM should produce a code once failed or are failing. For example coils, MAF, injectors but there are some exceptions like a fuel pump. This is why it is better to wait for the problem to happen again and have it scanned then, than throwing money at it now.

^^^ What he said.
Always start from the Easy and move to the Complex.
Easy: you visually inspect vacuum lines, battery cables and terminals, run some STP fuel treatment through the gas tank next time you fill up, etc.
