960 1992 blower fan quit working

Post by douger06 »

A couple of weeks/months ago I noticed that the fan for my heater seemed a bit slower than usual, yesterday it quit working. It does not work on any speed, normally I only use it on "aut". I checked the fuse - good. I read that on some models, foam is used to help seal the housing and this tends to dry out and get into the fan and can create problems so I took the fan out. I found that part of a plastic bag (one from a grocery store) was caught between the edge of the fan and the motor frame. The fan did turn, but not free wheel very good. I removed all of the bag and now the motor spins freely.
I also read about a relay and about a resistor.
Where do I find them and how do I check them to see if they are functioning properly?
How can I check the fan motor to know that it is good?
When I use my volt meter and put one lead on each of the wires that connect to the motor I get 12v.
mileage is about 233k

Me again, not the fan motor, I checked it by connecting it directly to my battery.
Still need help locating and checking the resistor and relay.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

That was how I was going to suggest testing the motor.

Have you tried connecting it up inside the car?

I have checked Volvo parts lists, workshop manuals and wiring diagrams and can find neither resistor nor relay for the '92 960 heater blower. The only relay shown in the wiring diagram is for the radiator cooling fan. Usually the resistor controls the lower speeds and the relay is used for the highest speed of the blower motor. I can only assume that the 960 system uses a different method.

I had exactly the same problem, and after bench testing the blower, and finding it was ok,I did the same voltage test of the connectors, and got the same results as you.So this puzzled me, I replaced the motor and it 'worked',what I found was that the ground connection on the motor housing was corroded, and by 'disturbing' it and cleaning it up.problem solved. If I had done this in the first place,I could have avoided 'bruised' knuckles.
