Exhaust sealant after converter

Post by TomT »

Has anyone found a sealant which works well at the infernal ball and socket connection between the conterter outlet pipe and the muffler inlet pipe?

The problem there is normally the clamps themselves. Beyond that about all you can do is weld it but that sets you up for a turbo back or manifold back replacement the next time something goes wrong. When I replaced my son's exhaust manifold I noticed that the joint had been welded.

Try the new clamps first, they are fairly cheap.

+1

I have never heard of a sealant that has worked for this. Just throw on some new claps and you should be good.

A new clamp was installed with the converter but it still leaks. Apparently, the socket connection at the inlet of the muffler changes shape a bit over the years. The seal is maintained because the ball connection at the exit of the converter changes with it. When a new converter only is installed, however, it doesn't precisely mate with the old muffler inlet. Hopefully, the metal will creep a bit with heat cycles and make a better fit eventually.

Exhaust sealants are popular in Europe for performance/luxury cars. There are many to choose from. Hylomar is a well know name with this product.

I have also used hi temp Copper from Permatex but this is better with temps at 700f or below .

I've used Volkswagen exhaust connector/clamps. They are about 5 inches long and have two clamps on the sleeve. Cut the ball off the one end and the socket off the other . Measure the outside diameter with a caliper and check out those connectors, there are about 5 or 6 different sizes. Used one on a Subaru today, worked sweet. Did it to an 850 last week. A bit easier for me though, our Volvo dealership is also a Volkswagen dealer, oh yea, and I work there :)
Also NAPA has some black exhaust goo/sealer that works fantastically.
